What Can 1099 Contract Workers or Freelancers do to Collect Money Owed Them?

Designers, programmers, web developers, graphic artists, illustrators, photographers, freelance writers, translators, models, consultants, wedding & event coordinators, equipment installers, truck drivers and many other specialties are commonly hired as independent contractors. In these trying and frustrating economic times, virtually anything that can be done as a full-time employee can be undertaken by a someone without the employee-employer burden working as a freelance, part timer, temporary, or “1099 worker.” Such employment “gigs” are generally paid on a, piece, hourly, contract, or job basis. Unfortunately, unlike actual “employees,” freelancers do not enjoy the same recourse to get the Department of Labor involved in disputes for nonpayment of their valuable work.
